Social workers work with people whose experiences are shaped by culture, poverty, inequality, power, discrimination and wider social and systemic contexts. Without critically examining our own assumptions and professional power, even well-intentioned practice can unintentionally reinforce the very inequalities we seek to address. This training will equip social workers to move beyond simply “knowing about” different cultures and towards a culturally humble, reflexive and genuinely anti-oppressive approach to practice. Through practical frameworks and applied examples, you will learn how to identify and challenge your own biases, distinguish observation from interpretation, conduct more culturally responsive interviews and assessments, recognise the influence of power and context, and use an anti-oppressive lens when making ethical decisions. The training also focuses on anti-oppressive report writing, helping you to represent clients’ voices and perspectives fairly, distinguish evidence from inference, consider alternative explanations, and produce reports that are both ethically sound and defensible.
